Overview

In recent years, China's piano arts business has made substantial progress, in pace with the rapid development of the socialist economy and the continuous improvement of living standards of Chinese people. Meanwhile a serior of major prizes won by Chinese young pianists in world-class international piano competitions has attracted world’s attention. As for non-professional piano performances, children who learned piano after-school from young age in earlier years have been grown-ups engaging in occupations, and some of which have chosen to be non-professional piano performers; an increasing group of retired people are keen on learning piano in order to enhance their cultural and artistic self-cultivation. Accordingly, since reform and opening up of China, the phenomenon of “piano enthusiasm” has rapidly presented and developed in large and medium cities. With the evolution and development throughout ten decades, piano has long been a shared wealth of modern humans, which has achieved great popularity globally. Piano players has outnumbered players of any other musicals instruments of all times, and thus celebrities and masters keen on piano arts presents numerous in political, economic and cultural fields.

The “Hi-Tech” International Piano Competition for Amateurs is the first competition, its unique highlight is for amateurs, it embodies the storng support of many non-professtional piano players and music experts at home and abroad.

Considering the non-professional characteristic of the competition, the jury of preliminary round will be mainly composed of young highly-educated piano elites in piano performance and education; the jury of final round, aside from world-famous pianist, will include some world-renowned celebrities with high piano artistic accomplishments without engaging in piano education as a career.

Each of the contestants who have joined the first round will be granted a specific comments from the expert jury and a certificate of participatiing the international piano competition from the organizing committee.

improving cultural communication around the world, and displaying China’s new look.

Regulations and Detailed Rules

1. Candidate Qualifications
The competition is open to candidates of all nationalities and both genders, with age ranged from 10 to 100 years old. Candidates may include music students who are not piano majors, those who have previously studied in music conservatory, as well as those who have reached considerable level of piano performance but are not engaged in the professions of piano performance, education or research. (except major of command, music education, composition, music theory).
2. Group Divisions
Group A:10—17 years old
Group B:18—25 years old
Group C:26—37 years old
Group D:38—50 years old
Group E:51—64 years old
Group F:65—100 years old

Note: The division of candidates into different age groups is based on the actual age due on the starting time of final round (Dec.12, 2009) (take Group A as an example: the starting time is Dec.1, 2009 when one reaches 10 and the deadline is Nov. 30, 2009 when one reaches 17).

3. Repertoire
Preliminary Round
①Repertoire:
Two pieces chosen from Classic, Romantic and/or Modern eras. All repertoires will be played by memory. (Except group E and F).
②Length of performance:
No more than 15 minutes for candidates from Group A-D.No more than 10 minutes for candidates from Group E-F.

Note: Preliminary candidates need not to come to game site, jury of the preliminary round assess the results of contestants of each divisions, and grant written comments by watch videos of every candidates(video tape, DVD, VCD or flash disk).

Final Round
①Repertoire:
At least three pieces. Two pieces should be chosen from Classic, Romantic and/or Modern eras. There’s no limitation on authors. Free to repeat the repertoire of preliminary round. The third piece must be chosen from composers of the candidate’s country (including compositions composed by the candidate himself/herself). All repertoires will be played by memory. (Except group E and F).
②Length of performance:
No more than 15 minutes for candidates from Group A-D. No more than 10 minutes for candidates from Group E-F.
4. Awards
The First Prize: 3000USD (one winner will be awarded in each group)
The Second Prize: 1500USD (two winner will be awarded in each group)
The Third Prize: 800USD (three winner will be awarded in each group)
Honorable Mention:several selected competitors will receive honorable mention from the judges

Application form requirements::
Following documents shall be submitted together with the application form:
(1) Three recent half-length photos (4x5cm)
(2) A Xerox copy of the applicant’s ID card or passport
(3) Resume: profile of majors, occupations and issues requiring special explanation.

Note: Unclear application form or insufficient documents shall be deemed invalid application. Application documents will not be returned. Candidate shall keep a copy of all mailed documents. The Competition Organizing Committee shall keep the candidate’s material confidential and have the right to demand additional documents from the candidate.

Eligibility Confirmation for Final Round
The Competition Organizing Committee will notify all the candidates of the result of the preliminary round.
Final Round Registration and Issues
Candidates shall arrive at the place designated by the Competition Organizing Committee in Tianjin, China on Nov.29-30, 2009.
The order in the competition will be decided by drawing lots by the candidates, and the order shall be maintained throughout the Final Round. Candidates must arrive at the competition venue on designated time. Failure to appear shall be deemed as giving up the qualification for competition.
All repertoires will be memorized. The order of performing repertoire will be decided by candidates.

Time Schedule

Stages Timing Descriptions
Preliminary competition application Apr. 28th ~Aug. 20th, 2009

Candidates will send performance videos, application forms, application fee and relative material to the organizing committee.

Preliminary round Aug. 26th~ Aug. 29th, 2009 Jury of the preliminary round assess the results of contestants of each divisions, and grant written Comments.
Preliminary round results notification and final eligibility confirmation Aug. 31st ~ Sep. 30th, 2009 Jury’s written comments and certificate will be sent to all preliminary contestants, as well as information to the finalists.
Final round application Sep. 30th ~ Nov. 1st, 2009 Finalists will send the application fee, repertoire, health guarantee (including companying persons) to the organizing committee.
Final round registration Nov. 29th ~ Nov. 30th, 2009 Finalists will register at the designated place
Final round Dec. 1st ~ Dec. 5th, 2009 Final round will be held in 5 groups in 4 days.
Piano recital and reward ceremony for award winners Dec. 6th, 2009 A piano recital and award ceremony will be held for award winners.
